At the British Museum I had dealings with a curator, and we opened a showcase that had not been touched since London abolished coal fires in the late 1950s. The item was so dirty that I was invited into the basement to wash my hands. They had three taps - one for hot water, one for cold water and one for Thames water. You could drink the cold water.
