Then when I looked for the report again to post about it, I saw the second one, which made me even grumpier. In the end I linked only to the more recent one, but thank you for reminding us about both.Darren Smythhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04252776942038752516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574479.post-61934507580562536942014-03-14T14:38:01.707+00:002014-03-14T14:38:01.707+00:00To anonymous at 13:26:00 - it probably does not he...To anonymous at 13:26:00 - it probably does not help with any debate on this issue to refer to "the Scots" as though "they" are uniformly ignorant. It is perfectly reasonable to point out that the proposed changes under the UPC would have certain additional consequences to parties based in Scotland (who are not necessarily, it bears mentioning, "Scots").Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574479.post-39400580287847340712014-03-14T14:24:44.647+00:002014-03-14T14:24:44.647+00:00How does one define a "business need" fo...How does one define a "business need" for these purposes? There's another BBC article on the same subject from a couple of days earlier (links to both are below).

The Government has been quite consistent I think with its comments on this issue so it did raise an eyebrow or two over here when we saw the way the "story" had been reported. Definitely an "IP Miss" for us for the BBC.

As far as I can tell the only development on the local division issue is that Mr David Willetts has explicitly linked it to a business need. I think previously he had only made statements along the lines of there being "close engagement between the UK Government and the devolved Administrations" on the subject.

Presumably a local division in Edinburgh would attract custom from the north of England as well so I guess the analysis will factor that in?

I did also wonder if the Government wanted to stall on this issue until the September referendum is out of the way!

Regards

Mark

BBC link 1 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-26536962

BBC link 2 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-26557306Mark Richardsonhttp://www.ipcopy.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574479.post-30493988946663178502014-03-14T13:26:31.519+00:002014-03-14T13:26:31.519+00:00It's funny to see all the uproar about the fac...It's funny to see all the uproar about the fact that Scots might have to travel to London to defend their patents.Don't they realize, that they'll have to travel to Germany or Finland if their inventions happen to be infringed there? If they complain about having to travel hundreds ok kilometers, what about those whose language is not French English or German? Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
