CANADIAN COPYRIGHT AMENDMENTS


CTV.ca reports that the Canadian federal government is expected to introduce new copyright legislation next week. The main expected development is the introduction of anti-circumvention provisions, though making copies for personal use will remain legal. Also expected is the introduction of a “notice-on-notice” system – copyright owners will notify ISPs about suspected illegal downloaders, who will then notify the downloaders.

The IPKat counsels the Canadians to ensure that there are sufficient exceptions in the new law to make permitted person copying possible. However, at the risk of sounding like a broken record (sorry, MP3), the IPKat says that unless, it falls within a defence, copying is illegal, so the best way to avoid being caught by anti-circumvention provisions is to not make illegal copies.
