SOMETHING FISHY FROM BRUSSELS

The Herald reports that the Scottish town of Arbroath is celebrating a boost to its economy in the form of protection as a geographical indication for its most famous export, the Arbroath smokie. The EU protection for the smoked haddock is set to see the creation of 15 jobs by the biggest producer in the area. Until now, fish from as far afield as Cornwall and even outside the UK have been sold under the label, but now only those made within a five-mile radius of Arbroath according to the traditional smoking method will able to use it. Legend has it that the recipe was discovered when fishermen came upon a piece of haddock in the aftermath of a fire that burned down a cottage. The irony is that the fish was first smoked not in Arbroath, but in Auchmithie, which is two miles north of the town.

The IPKat is always happy to see a story that marries his two biggest passions: intellectual property and fish.
