IP and Retail: first the conference, now the competition

Sometimes the IPKat's nagging does pay off. For some while now, he has been chipping away at CLT Conferences, which organises next month's IP and Retail conference, and pleading for that company to relent. In the olden days, if he was participating in a conference he could usually induce the company to offer a free place as a prize for a competition relating to the event's subject matter. But subsequently, with the recession, sub-prime banking crises and the growth of popularity of webinars, these precious free places dried up. Good news was however just around the corner: today this Kat, who is chairing IP and Retail on 13 February, heard that, since registrations were going well, the company was happy to give him a complimentary registration.

Now for the competition. It's a chance for readers to complete a limerick on the theme of intellectual property in the retail sector. It must with the line
"Merpel once entered a store ..."
Can you write the next four lines in a manner that alludes both to the retail sector and intellectual property rights? If so, this competition if just right for you!  The best entry gets free admission to the conference -- plus a tasty and equally free lunch. Entries, by email here with the subject line "Merpel goes shopping", must be received by close of play on Thursday 6 February. Competitors may submit more than one entry. The best entries will be published on this weblog.  Entries which are not in the traditional five-line limerick format will be disqualified -- though Merpel reserves the right to post them here too.
