MULTIPLE COPIES FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED: NEW UK ORDER

The Copyright (Educational Establishments) Order 2005 (SI 2005 No. 223) was laid before the United Kingdom Parliament on 8 February and comes into force on 1 April (seriously).

This Order, made under section 174(1)(b) of the 1988 Act, lists those educational establishments that can take advantage of certain exceptions to copyright for the purpose of
* making multiple copies for visually impaired persons;

* performing, playing or showing work in course of activities of
educational establishments

* recording of broadcasts by educational establishments

* reprographic copying of passages from published works by educational establishments

* lending of copies by educational establishments.

British educational establishments continue to benefit from various
permissions to carry out what would otherwise be infringing acts

According to the accompanying memorandum, it does not expand the number or type of educational establishments that are entitled to take advantage of it.

THe IPKat says, please amend your records accordingly.

All comments must be moderated by a member of the IPKat team before they appear on the blog. Comments will not be allowed if the contravene the IPKat policy that readers' comments should not be obscene or defamatory; they should not consist of ad hominem attacks on members of the blog team or other comment-posters and they should make a constructive contribution to the discussion of the post on which they purport to comment.

It is also the IPKat policy that comments should not be made completely anonymously, and users should use a consistent name or pseudonym (which should not itself be defamatory or obscene, or that of another real person), either in the "identity" field, or at the beginning of the comment. Current practice is to, however, allow a limited number of comments that contravene this policy, provided that the comment has a high degree of relevance and the comment chain does not become too difficult to follow.
