Following yesterday's shock news that Lord Marland had stepped down as the UK's Minister responsible (sic) for Intellectual Property, and the
launch of an exciting rumour that he might be replaced by an elevated Lady Beckham, Politics Live with Andrew Sparrow
reports:
... Viscount Younger of Leckie has been made a junior business minister, replacing Lord Marland ...
Viscount Younger of Leckie is that curious creature of British politics, an elected hereditary peer, and deputy chairman of the Buckingham Constituency Conservative Association. You can peruse his Lords biography
here.
His father was a heavy-hitter in previous Conservative Govt. Let's hope he is too. There are other politicians' offspring doing well in the HL, eg Lord Attlee.
ReplyDeleteMark, you say Viscount Younger's father was a heavy-hitter and the blog says he's a hereditary peer. Are minor British ministers the result of some sort of selective breeding programme?
ReplyDeleteThere's a special intellectual property right - a bit like plant breeders' rights - called Primogeniture Right. Holders of the right have something called "father's privilege". Unfortunately, genetic mutation often causes degradation of the seed stock, making investment in the right a highly risky business. Not suitable for unsophisticated investors.
DeleteThe Viscount even has a Polish Wikipedia entry. Very promising!
ReplyDeletePosh Spice might be better qualified.
