On 16 May the Official Journal of the European Union published in its online edition a new piece of EU legislation: Regulation 386/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 April 2012 on entrusting the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) with tasks related to the enforcement of intellectual property rights, including the assembling of public and private-sector representatives as a European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights.

The European Commission has high hopes that this will provide badly-needed support for legitimate businesses in the EU in their seemingly endless and unwinnable battle against IP infringers. While he fervently hopes that he will be proved wrong, IPKat team member Jeremy doubts that it will achieve this noble objective.
